Receiving compliments can be surprisingly hard. Whether they come from a stranger or someone close to us, kind words often leave us feeling uncomfortable or unsure.

For many of us, it’s easier to give gratitude than to receive it. Instead of letting the compliment in, we sidestep it—brushing it off, minimizing ourselves, or even focusing on our flaws. In doing so, we unknowingly block love and kindness from entering our hearts.

But why is it so hard to receive a compliment or accept gratitude?

Often, it’s because we don’t believe we deserve it. We struggle to recognize our own worth, and past wounds may have taught us to doubt ourselves. These deep-rooted beliefs make it difficult to see the good in ourselves, and so we deflect what’s meant to uplift us.

The journey to accepting gratitude begins with self-compassion. When we learn to treat ourselves with the same kindness we offer others, we create space for healing. Over time—and with patience and practice—we can soften the inner critic and allow love, praise, and connection in.

Let’s take a moment together now.

Find a comfortable seat. Gently close your eyes. Begin to follow your breath—in and out, slow and steady. When you feel ready, silently or softly begin to repeat this ancient Buddhist mantra of compassion:

Om Mani Padme Hum

Let the sound and intention of this mantra fill your being. Feel its vibration flowing into your heart. With each repetition, allow a little more love in. A little more peace. A little more acceptance.

Stay here as long as you need—10 to 15 minutes, or longer if it feels right.

Let your heart soften. Let yourself receive.

With love and gratitude,

Lindsay
