The Hands That Hold Us

Grateful Friday: A reflection on the quiet gift of being cared for.

There’s a moment in a yoga class, during a thoughtful adjustment, when someone’s hands find exactly the place that’s been working too hard, and something in you finally lets go.

In that moment, you realize you were carrying more than you knew.

Maybe that’s true far beyond the yoga mat.

Many of us become the steady ones. The people others lean on. We notice what needs tending, offer support, hold space, solve problems, and keep going. Over time, it becomes part of who we are.

And somewhere along the way, we forget that we need holding, too.

Care rarely arrives with fanfare.

It comes quietly.

A friend who checks in without knowing why.

A single heart sent at exactly the right moment.

Someone whose presence makes everything feel just a little lighter.

The person who stays.

These moments are easy to overlook because they don’t ask for attention. They simply remind us that we were never meant to carry everything alone.

Lately, I’ve found myself noticing these small acts of care more than ever. They’ve reminded me that receiving isn’t weakness. It’s part of being human.

Perhaps that’s one of life’s gentlest lessons.

We spend so much time trying to be the hands that hold others that we forget to notice the hands that are holding us.

So this Grateful Friday, I’d love to leave you with a question.

Who has quietly held you lately?

Who has made your burden a little lighter simply by showing up?

Take a slow breath and let one face come to mind.

Notice what happens in your body as you think of them.

Then, if you can, let them know.

We often underestimate the power of being seen. And we just as often underestimate the gift of letting ourselves be cared for.

Maybe gratitude isn’t only about giving thanks.

Maybe it’s about noticing the quiet ways we’ve been loved.

About recognizing that, even in the seasons when we believed we were carrying everything alone, someone was quietly carrying a little of us, too.

As you move through today, I hope you’ll notice the small kindnesses that surround you.

And I hope you’ll remember that allowing yourself to be held is not a sign of weakness.

It’s one of the ways we heal.

xo,

Lindsay
